Ulku Oktem, PhD
 

Dr. Oktem is an Adjunct Professor at the Operations and Information Management Department and Senior Research Fellow at the Risk Center of the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. Prior to her involvement in academia Dr. Oktem was with Rohm and Haas Company, where she managed product development and manufacturing of various specialty chemicals. She is one of the principal researchers in the area of near-miss management systems in the world. Her research has received global recognition and in-depth coverage in several academic journals as well as the Financial Times (UK), Plastics and Rubber Weekly (UK), and the Institute of Management & Administration (IOMA). She authored the Near-Miss Chapter of Willey and Son’s Risk Encyclopedia

Dr. Oktem began her career as Associate Director of the Chemical Division of The Marmara Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey where she established an environmental research group and directly interacted with manufacturers and government authorities. Dr. Oktem holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering.   


Ather Williams Jr.
 

Ather is a world-renowned champion for workplace health and safety. He is a results-driven business leader and influential safety advocate who spent over 40 years at Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest health care products company. As worldwide Vice President of Health & Safety, Ather ensured there was a comprehensive health and safety programs across the diverse enterprise of Johnson & Johnson that encompasses more than 250 operating companies in 57 countries employing 119,500 people involved in the businesses of Consumer Pharmaceuticals and Nutritionals, Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices and Diagnostics, and Consumer and Personal Care. Ather developed several partnerships with OSHA; he championed J&J’s winning of the prestigious Campbell Award, and instituted a global incident management system. He has a proven record of accomplishment in preventing workplace injuries and illness; driving the globalizing of J&J’s Health Programs and adopting a holistic approach to the health and safety for each and every employee. He has been Chairman of the Board for National Safety Council and is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board for Prevent Blindness Tristate. In 2008, Occupational Hazards Magazine selected Ather as one of the “50 Most Influential Environmental, Health & Safety Leaders having an impact on EHS in the past decade.” Ather has a BS Degree from the Loyola University of Chicago and an MBA from University of Chicago and a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies' Leadership Coaching Certification program, 


Liz Miles
 

Liz has spent 30 years working in occupational safety & health. Liz Miles has worked for Johnson & Johnson (J&J), E.I. DuPont, AIG, and American Hoechst in the areas of toxicology, industrial hygiene, safety management and learning and development strategies. She introduced behavior-based safety management and created the global incident management system while at J&J. Liz served as a member of the Accident Precursor committee for the National Academy of Sciences and has served as the chairperson for The Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes’ Advisory Committee. Liz is the author of the workplace environmental exposure level document (WEEL) published for monochloroacetic acid by the American Industrial Hygiene Association; she also published an article in the Journal of Hazardous Materials on incident management. Liz has an M.S. in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.L.A. in the History of ideas from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Maryland. Liz is greenbelt certified in DMAIIC principles and holds certifications in Human Resources and Equal Employment Opportunity from Cornell University.


Lou Bucelli
 

Lou Bucelli is an advisor to universities on strategies to commercialize new technologies. Lou has twenty-five years experience in developing, managing and investing in high growth businesses. He was investor in FlashScan, a RFID software technology company focused on asset management. He was managing partner of Private Practice Publications, a dental publication and seminar company. Lou served as CEO of 2020 Internet/CMECourses.com, an e-commerce site and search engine promoting continuing medical education programs.

Prior to that Lou served as CEO of CME Information Services, a high growth, distance medical education company that collaborated with leading medical institutions like Mayo Clinic, Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The company was ranked on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies in America for three consecutive years. Lou was Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year for emerging business. Lou has an MS in Finance from Drexel University College of Business, and he has attended the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.

Board Members

Paul R. Kleindorfer, PhD
 

Dr. Kleindorfer is Paul Dubrule Professor of Sustainable Development & Distinguished Research Professor in Technology and Operations Management at INSEAD.  He is also the Anheuser-Busch Professor Emeritus of Management Science at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kleindorfer was a faculty member at Wharton from 1973 to 2006. He graduated with distinction (B.S.) from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1961. He studied on a Fulbright Fellowship in Mathematics at the University of Tübingen, Germany (1964/65), followed by doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University, from which he received his Ph.D. in 1970 in Systems and Communication Sciences at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration. Before joining INSEAD in 2006, he spent 33 years as a faculty member at the Wharton School. Dr. Kleindorfer’s work has been focused on risk management, including major accident prevention, operational flexibility, and systemic approaches to manage environmental, health and safety risks.  His current research is on sustainable operations to mitigate presumed consequences of industrial activity on the biosphere and climate.  


Phillip Lewis, MD
 

Dr. Lewis is a Principal of the Carthage Investment Group.  He has 25 years of experience as the Vice President and Director, Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainable Development for Rohm and Haas Company. Phil received his medical and public Health training at Johns Hopkins University with a concentration in preventive medicine and epidemiology with special studies related to problems of immune reactions in the skin from environmental exposures and is an author of many papers on the above subject. Phil served as the chairperson for The Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes’ Advisory Committee. Phil has renowned reputation in Health & Safety as well as medicine.


Patrick R. Tyson, J.D.
 

Patrick R. Tyson joined the law firm of Constangy, Brooks & Smith as a partner after a 13-year career in the U.S. Department of Labor. Pat is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council and was formerly Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Safety Council’s Foundation for Safety and Health. He serves as Counsel to the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association (VPPPA). Pat earned his B.S. degree in business from Auburn University and his Jurist Doctorate from the University Of Toledo College Of Law. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association’s Committee on Occupational Safety and Health.
